Katniss Everdeen lives in District 12. She helps take care of her mother and sister by hunting, even though it is illegal. When the drawing for The Hunger Games comes up, 12 year old Primrose Everdeen, sister of Katniss, is called to be the girl representative for District 12, Katniss runs up to take her place. Now Katniss is literally in the game of her life, can her hunting and survival skills keep her alive, when 23 other people are hunting to kill her and claim victory for their district?

ok, I had a hard time getting through the first part when she was still at home and the writer was setting up for the games. Then the games started and I got sucked in. I have passed this off to several teens and they too have loved it. One shared it with his mom and were able to talk about it. Definately in my top 5!
This was definitely a good read. I was a little turned off by the fake (?) romance however - which remains unresolved until book two. I can see how it would have teen appeal though. It's in the deck for me - but there are a few negatives in the storyline...Reading on...
This book has had the widest range of appeal I've seen of any book this year. I have a senior in high school that loved it, along with his sister who is in 8th grade. So far, this has been my favorite book of the past year.
Ok, well I am not done with this book yet, and should therefore reserve judgement until I am finished, but at the halfway point I definately think this will be in the top five. This book is very exciting, well written, and so far seems pretty timeless. I havent enjoyed many books as much as this one yet this year. I will be sure to update when I am done, but for now I just cant wait to get back in my car and listen to some more.
After finishing this book I am a bit more in agreement with Kevin. I really enjoyed this book, but a few parts are negatives for me. The biggest is that it was left fairly unresolved to me. This is fine as sequels will be coming out, but I don’t know if it totally stands alone in my mind. Also, there was a lot of scenes that just seemed a little to simple to me, with problems being solved too easily. That being said, it was one of the most enjoyable books I have read this year and I simply could not stop listening. It is up there for me, but I am not sure yet if it will make the top 5.
This book definitely gets the popular vote, seeing as how it doesn't stay on the shelves, EVER! The writing isn't the absolute best writing in a teen novel this year. The concept and story is very appealing. We'll have to see how the teens vote!
I listened to this on audiobook while on a trip this weekend, and while I agree that the romance aspect is a bit overplayed, this book still holds up for me and I find it much more engaging and compelling than most of the other top 20 choices. Still a top choice for me.
