The Compound by S.A. Bodeen

The Compound by S.A. Bodeen
This first novel by author Bodeen is a truly gripping thriller. Eli, 15 years old, and most of his family have been locked away for the last six years in a massive underground shelter built by his billionaire father. Life on the outside has been destroyed by a nuclear war that also claimed the lives of Eli's twin brother and grandmother who were unable to make it to the shelter in time. They have 9 years to go before the door to the shelter can be unlocked but they are running out of supplies and won't last much longer. But then Eli makes a shocking discovery that changes everything.

Great book. I just would have like to have seen a little more afterwards. It focused so much on the compound and escaping (which was great and read quickly) that I wanted more. How he was able to get the right dates in the right order seemed to stretch it a bit. Ultimately I think there are books I would rather see as the winner.

I really enjoyed this book, and I read it within a day. I agree that there could have been a little more meat after they got out of the compound. Really good book, but not the best book of the year.

hmm, after reading it, I have to say, I am a little disappointed that this book made the top twenty. The premise is awesome, and the book started out really well, but I felt like the author really rushed to make everything happen. Characters were leaping to conclusions that totally changed their worldview in the matter of minutes. He kept introducing new and crazy things, like the supplements, that seemed a little unbelievable. I mean really, how could there be a 5 year old kid living in a compound that size, and our main character never once saw or met him. Also the end seemed too quick, without ever really explaining much about why the father really did this, not to mention how quickly they kept getting new twists that should be almost unsolvable, yet they find a way to solve them within a few min.

Ok, so that was a bit harsher then I intended, but I just don’t think this book was very good. I do love the concept, and it started good enough to keep me reading, but by the mid point it was just very hard to believe at all.

I did enjoy this book and didn't have problems suspending my disbelief, but after Josh's comments, I do see that others might! Not my favorite, but a lot of fun!

This one was ok for me. Just ok. Falls to the bottom rungs of the top 20.

As I weed my 3rd copy of this book from the Teen shelf, I realize that this one has gotten a lot of hype! It would make a great Terminator type movie. I don't think it's going away soon--I'm sure there will be a sequel. I liked it but didn't love it.
